Sarah blog-Chapter 2

Sometimes legistlation can be so important to an education community that it can affect children with disabilities even without being directed toward them. The No Child Left Behind Act has had a special impact on children with disabilities and honestly is comepletely unfair to them. The NCLB was put in affect by the George W. Bush administration and its purpose was to make schools responsible for every student being able to make it a certain level of competency.NCLB pros & cons
Can you imagine if you were a gym teacher and someone telling you every single student has to run the mile in 6 minutes? That is just impossible because every student is different and every student has different capabilities. Especially students with special needs because just imagine the students in wheelchairs how can they possibly make it around a mile in 6 minutes. This analogy pertains to course work as well. Some students with disabilities just cannot meet these standards even no matter how hard they try.
People have realized how foolish this act is and I understand that several attempts have been made to amend the law and rewrite legislation, but the NCLB act will still remain a problem for students with special needs
In order for schools to understand what a particular child needs out of the education system every child needs to be individually assessed. Assessment of a child is done in order to identify what makes a child different from the "average" child and then what the education system can do to cater to that childs needs. Teachers usually use five general tests and approaches to assessing a child. These are norm-referenced tests, dianostic achievement tests, interviews, ovservations, and informal assessments.

  1. Please check for spelling.
Also - take a look into the role of Formative Assessment. This is powerful, and might help you understand my approach to teaching.
I appreciate your stance on this legislation, but at a more critical level - who is it working for? Can you take a look at the other side in relation to the benefits of NCLB?
This would make your posting much stronger.
